First Look: Sony Reader PRS-900 eBook Daily Edition
Daily Edition The Sony Reader PRS-900, first e-book reader from Sony's wireless finally home. I hoped my dethrone Touch Edition Sony Reader PRS-600, which also sports an e-ink display with touch screen technology, but I must admit Reader to the daily edition is tempting. That extra 1.1 inches of screen real estate is not just for high-speed readers, but allows Sony to further expand over the home screen and have sufficient space for the display of the tent.
As with the PRS-600, the 900 has an excellent user interface is very intuitive and the 900, very graphic. Not looking for text-based lists of titles with little or no visual separation between content types (Kindle, I'm looking at you). In change you have a section for the latest installments (usually periodicals) with a cover photo, another section with a shortcut to continue reading his latest book or newspaper, a section of books and magazines cover the icons of all the newspapers in the reader, collections (create collections as a way of organizing content) and notes. Nice.
The store works with the radio built into AT & T 3G wireless (no monthly fees). There is no web browser, just access to the library. The store is attractive, intuitive and can be turned on or off the purchase of a click. We like to be able to turn off a purchase, click and go to the shopping cart instead because it's too easy for a beginner, a friend or a child who accidentally buy, buy, buy. You also need to enter their online bookshop Sony password to enter the library (again, prevents thieves, children and curious cats purchase of content). The library was unable to load a little faster and we suspect infrastructure improvements could make this happen, because 3G AT & T is strong here and the Sony Daily Edition Reader receives a stronger signal that exposure of LG and HP shine. Books and magazines downloaded very quickly, demonstrating good 3G service here in the Dallas area. As with the Kindle, you can subscribe to magazines, or just buy the current issue. Subscriptions automatically downloaded when a new issue available.
If you want to load content side by Sony Reader desktop application on Windows and Mac, you can do without any problem. Or all what can downlaod via wireless and desktop software to avoid. That is, if only to read the content obtained from Sony's online bookstore. To upload your own text, music, PDF files and how you can use a card reader as the daily edition has a slot for Memory Stick Duo and SD card slot. But if you want to load electronic books from the library, you need the desktop software. Software Store offers the reader not currently have access to public libraries or Google Books – will have to get these through a computer.
We expected much of the same ho-hum design for newspapers as we saw in the
Kindle 2. Interestingly, Sony's version of the Wall Street Journal is presented more as an actual print publication with images and links contact capable of stories – definitely like! We will be testing all publications in our full review, and enjoy the 14 day free trial (as that on the Kindle).
The display is a 600 x 1024 Vizplex E-Ink screen that measures 7.1 "and has 16 levels of gray. The gray levels help with images, such as book covers and photos that is loaded into the device, but less of a difference to the text. Since the PRS-900 does not bars, pubs and use the images, it makes sense go with the 16 shades of gray. Does it look better than my PRS-600 edition touchscreen when reading the text? I would say are quite similar, and that means clarity slightly lower due to a reduction of the layer of the touch screen contrast. I find it very readable, even if not as high contrast as the gold standard Sony Reader PRS-505 Pocket Edition and Sony Reader PRS-300 e-book readers.
PDF work similar to the PRS-600: you can change the font size (in general, screw design for the PDF), or zoom in the screen using contols without interruption of the distribution. In portrait mode, text is small, not powerful zoom from Most PDF files are set to 8.5 x 11 ". But in landscape mode, PDF files are readable without zooming required. That said, he will do a lot of displacement, since each 8.5 x 11 page takes about 3 screens landscape.
The pain so great is the PRS-900 price tag of $ 399. In a bad economy, the price is everything and the daily edition is worthy of the DX Kindle (an even larger 9.7 "eReader). In order to sell these things cheaper, manufacturers have stopped accessories, but the daily edition comes with everything you need (which increases the initial cost). You get a charger, a leather wrapped separately Flip and semi-rigid Zipper Case Logic. I would not be surprised if Sony offers the daily edition without case, the logic of the case for less money in the future. But still, good to have all the goodies in the box. It is worth mentioning that this is the first Sony Reader to a removable battery: Yes!
The Sony Reader Daily Edition has an integrated dictionary that you can access when in a book or directly through the dictionary icon in the Applications tab. It has an MP3 player, 3.5mm jack stereo, a stylus (useful for writing notes on books and when using the drawing / scribble app) and supports both portrait and landscape modes. Account with 6 font sizes and page offers one and two page layouts.
Let's have a video review of Sony Reader daily Morning Edition and a full written review in a few days. Please feel free to post questions
