Canon Sd1200Is – Great camera with some peculiarities

Overall this camera takes excellent pictures. I mostly use the Auto mode, it works well. I took night shots of a city and downtown Christmas lights. The images were beautiful. The macro function also works well for photos closely.

I took two pictures at night of the big red sign V at the Varsity in Atlanta. One with the Canon, one with a Sony DSC-H20. Neither the camera is completely accurate color, and we both took a little longer than it was orange in real life. But Canon photo (with a 100% zoom in Photoshop) took a sharper image. The letters, twigs and leaves are all sharper, and some leaves on the top were brighter. The Sony was more diffuse, the letters were more blurred and misty. The leaves in the darkest corner too. But the Sony is slightly more accurate with color.

A rarity: A couple of times in automatic mode, this camera Canon tried to use the macro to something that was not nearly so I had to switch to P. But that does not happen often.

The biggest disappointment I've had so far is that the new Class 4 memory card I bought high-speed Can not read the old card reader on my computer. So I have to connect the camera via the USB cable. And a couple of times, that my PC has crashed, and he wants to default to use the camera "Microsoft and scanner wizard" to download the photos. I have installed the Canon software, which could be the problem. But I've never installed any software that came with my Sony camera, either, and never had that kind of problem with them.

Sometimes I'm able to connect the camera up without problem, and simply click your drive in My Computer to open the photos, but sometimes it works well. So I do not know if this is a matter of Canon. My computer has been updated with a new hard drive and more RAM, so do not think it's the PC.

The camera takes good quality video clips as well. They record in AVI format, that opens directly in Windows Media Player. But I had a problem last night with a 7-minute clip of video that contain errors after being thrown on my desk. WMP not read it, and presented as 0 byte file size. I do not know why, because he played very well in the camera. So I had to open the Wizard Microsoft Camera and use it to just copy a video file. It worked better than the weather. I am using a Lexar Memory Card, Class 4, SDHC. Maybe I have to use another brand of memory? if anyone has any ideas let me know. I thought I read somewhere that Canon recommends SanDisk.

One thing to know: If you want zoom in video mode, not to approach and THEN start recording, because it will lock the zoom and you can not move in or out. Zoom, firstly, the registration Start, then use the zoom. Also the weak 3X zoom does not help much in the way of video. The zoom works for a better quality of photographs, than it does in the video mode.

The camera starts very fast and easy to use. I would like the catch was greater. The battery cover is a kind Hinge weak. I also hope that these small compact cameras were bigger or had large grips on the side. They need to put the buttons back on the left side instead of right, since most people are right handed. If you have to grip the camera with one hand, always worry about accidentally pressing a button function, while taking a picture. It would be nice if the flash was closer to half, and the speaker on the back was closer to half. They are both places where someone could accidentally put your finger on them, if they were not paying attention. I would like the silver ring around the lens was grinding metal, because the shiny metal shows many of the fingerprints.
