Robert Mapplethorpe: "Paul White is my only competitor"
Paul White (1954-58), Paul Vlaswinkel official name, is a Dutch artist (art photographer) that had been a breakthrough in the 80s of last century with his self-portraits of violent confrontation. The self-taught contacted White the art world when he met Eva Veldhoen, the daughter of the famous Dutch painter Aat Veldhoen (1934). The knowledge of these artistic was a real revelation for Blanca and shortly thereafter began photographing, first color camera with a small screen, but soon after shooting in B & W with a Hasselblad camera (6 x 6 cm).
In 1980 he was introduced to the world-famous choreographer Hans van Manen (1932), a photographer himself and had merit a photographic studio. In addition to their mutual interest in photography, Van Manen White is also used in one of his dance choreography Posture he calls White made as a kick-boxer, who was a practitioner of the sport of full contact on the age of 16, surrounded by dancing. Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) that was a close friend of Van Manen was very impressed by the very White Portraits and later introduced him to high society of New York (as Keith Haring, Willem de Kooning, Japsen Johns, Grace Jones, … etc.) indicating Paul White is my only competitor. The art collector Bill Katz says Anthony Haden True Colors Guest's - The Real Life of the White Art World: "… he reaches a kind of poetry few artists have."
Most self-portraits of White against strong emotions and violent themes such as fear, sadness, pain, aggression and sexuality to explore their inner demons. Diametrically against this hard work, the images are not sensitive and soft as the so-called Mother and Son (Mapplethorpe favorite) representing himself in a tender embrace with her mother, both naked, and the portrait with her newborn baby in the air, called Father and Son.
In 1986, White worked in a book called Time (Edition 1000) which included the Dutch eighties new artists and their pictures were accompanied by poems of Dalstra Koos (1950). For his touching series Par la Pluie des Femmes (1989) asked his female models to think about their most traumatic experiences. Together with Hans Gielen and Francis Gallery Boeske Vous ĂȘtes ici produced the magnificent Sangre de Toro in the series from 1991 (see paragraph Blood of 'Bull' below). During this time White also began as an investigation, journalist with the weekly Amsterdam, Nieuwe Revu and the newspaper Het Parool. He wrote about crack and again to explore their own boundaries, he began using it himself, resulting in an addiction. His article for Nieuwe Revu of arms was the starting point of a downward spiral with him being a suspect in the assault on Rob Scholte, in 1995, due to its knowledge "of grenades. There was a long silence, but in 2008 returned with a project called My White Mattes in which photographed hanging around gangmembers of his study.
Self-portraits
Over the years there seems to be a growing willingness of power in the White self-portraits. In 1982 he photographed himself with eels Holding six eels that live in the mouth (in their perception of a disagreeable animal), we see in the world (the viewer) with a resigned facial expression as if thinking "that's what really happens" with scavengers fulfilling their desire to immortalization.
Self-portrait by White, again with Mickey Mouse, offers an overview on his back, inflicted with a razor blade was done by a tattoo artist friend of Mickey Mouse with his thumbs up and a big smile, as if saying: "Keep up the good work" is a statement skeptical because the mouse is crying.
In his Self-Portrait Bull (1982) White becomes covered in body paint disguised as a bull and aggressive facial expression, a troubled figure. With his erect penis in his left hand and his right hand into a fist which is looking for an effort disarmament of the poetic image.
The excessive nature of self-portraits serve as a purification Blanca, so you have to tear down all boundaries and rules.
Sangre de Toro (Bull's Blood)
White, who had lived and worked in Spain for two years (in the years 90), had, while obsessed with bullfighting and maintained with all fairs (seasonal local festivals) to take pictures. To challenge yourself emotionally White also participated in a bullfight, with no actual bulls, but with dangerous cows (cows) of more than 800 pounds.
He was intrigued when the bullfight (bull) came to an end, the bull meat is served in restaurants, but nothing was done with the blood is the fluid of life, after all. White investigated whether blood could be used as screen printing ink. The treated blood was used for the port-folio Sangre de Toro, based on White's pictures. When you press the ink through the screen at once produced only pale pink, and the final 35 'pulls' were necessary to achieve darker images, creating a visible relief. The series is a high point on the periphery of the photographic work of White. For affecionades (devotees) is an obligation for the opponents of the bulls is also a monument of beauty.
