A GPS or Global Positioning System was developed on the principle and controlled by the U.S. Department Defense. Before being used for commercial reasons of degree, the satellite system was used by the military for the day and night navigation by land, sea and air operations. This handheld GPS also weighs about 12 grams, which is very heavy compared to the Garmin. The battery life the Magellan is about 15 hours using four AA batteries.
