Asus Ul50Vf Review
The new Sony VGP-bps8 ASUS UL50Vf is an update of the UL50Vt popular 15 inches and offers new Optimus switchable Nvidia graphics. Why are we reviewing this modest update? Optimus is honest, because the first interchangeable graphics solution that works as it should.
Our ASUS UL50Vf has the following specifications:

Building and Design
The UL50Vf ASUS offers a design that is identical UL50Vt and UL80Vt similar to 14-inches. This is a classic clamshell design, with lines smooth and rounded edges. The hinge point drop give the notebook an almost aerodynamic and plastic construction keeps this 15-inch notebook reasonably light weight. A height of only 1.1 inches, is undoubtedly a team thin and chiseled sides inwards make it look even thinner. The UL50Vf, as the rest of the UL series has an all plastic construction - with the exception of the aluminum-backed top. All visible surfaces are shiny plastic what it means that dust and fingerprints easily displayed. If you want to keep your laptop as new will have to keep a microfiber cloth very useful for constant cleaning.
The brushed aluminum lid is the most stylish design element in this notebook and gives this otherwise all plastic notebook a touch of life. Once opened, the island style (gum-style) keyboard helps make this notebook a bit boring visually more appealing. The Palmrests are sufficiently large to give a comfortable resting place while they write and the flush-mount touchpad is nice and big also.
Unfortunately, the bright plastic UL50Vf that give a modern look and keep the weight down also makes the notebook chassis too weak and flexible. We were able to visibly turn scraps (open and closed) with moderate pressure, which means this notebook could be vulnerable to damage in a backpack with heavy books. This large amount of Flex states that the internal structure of the laptop is not strong enough to overcome the weakness in the plastics field.
Furthermore, the bevel of the screen plastic below the screen is pretty weak that we can pull it off the screen with little effort. In summary, while plastics are reasonable offer quality construction, the lack of a strong internal structure of poorly UL50Vf some plastics that feel less durable than most 15-inch laptops.
The bottom UL50Vf offers users the ability to quickly access the RAM and hard drive bay for easy upgrades in the home. We like the fact that ASUS using a single access panel so that the owners do not have to remove covers many of the bottom of the notebook you want to upgrade the RAM and hard drive simultaneously. However, using the four screws that appears exaggerated and makes the updates that consume little longer than necessary.
Screen and speaker
The UL50Vf has a 15-inch screen with LED backlight, a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1366x768. Its glossy ago that images are clearer, at the expense of glare / reflections under sunlight or interior lighting. The screen is full of brilliance but the contrast is low, making pictures look a little washed if you adjust the brightness to the maximum. Viewing angles of horizontal viewing angles are adequate to the exchange of movies with a friend in a plane, but vertical are limited and must be the screen tilt just right to get an accurate picture. The biggest problem have with this screen resolution is 1366x768 unacceptably low. A 15-inch notebook with a 16:9 ratio screen must have a minimum screen resolution of 1600x900 pixels. Most 11-inch laptops offer 1366x768 resolution so it's just sad to see such a low-resolution 15-inch screen.
Stereo speakers UL50Vf offering little in terms of scope or bass. The volume levels are not high enough at the maximum and the sound is very metallic. The low firing speaker also means that the audio sounds muffled when using this laptop as a laptop "" as the sound goes in your lap or crotch. The headphone jack is fortunately free of static and the best way to get audio from the laptop.
Keyboard and touchpad
The gum has a UL50Vf / Island style keyboard with a dedicated numeric keypad for those who still use pads number for fast data entry. While the island has more room style keys including a traditional keyboard layout of this keyboard in particular suffers of flexs below the signature keyboard typing flex.The pressure on the right side above the optical drive. This is unfortunate because the area where the Flex is right keypad dedicated and is very likely that the announcement of Flex to write numbers. The keys are also noisier than they prefer ... produce a "click clack" sound while writing.
ELAN The touchpad is also lower than the average driver with limited functionality and few configuration options to improve movement cursor. Its surface is bright and hard to follow on the button in one piece is a bit noisy and hard to press with superficial comments. You have to apply pressure at the far left and right edge of the touchpad button clicks to get to register.
Ports and Features
The UL50Vf has a reasonable number of ports like the UL50Vt.You get three USB ports and HDMI out for connecting your laptop to your HDTV and a VGA port for connecting to a projector or external monitor. The notebook also has a Kensington lock slot and Bluetooth. All photo descriptions are from left to right.
And benchmarks
The trend continues in UL50Vf laptops Consumer Overclocking ASUS Ultra Low Voltage (Culver) Intel Core 2 Duo 1.3 GHz to 1.73 GHz, giving a performance increase of Nice on the processor speed of stock Culver. Combined with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 320GB hard drive good, the UL50Vf is perfectly capable of handling everyday tasks such as Microsoft Office or Photoshop and can even handle video editing applications and games more intensively through NVIDIA graphics card.
The G210M is to incorporate Nvidia GeForce graphics card and as such, can not play games like Crysis very well. We tested the system with Left 4 Dead and World In Conflict and the G210M handle both games in the native screen resolution and detail settings medium, with perfectly playable frame rates (25 + frames per second). ASUS UL50Vf Although clearly not intended as a gaming notebook, the 16 shader units and the 64-bit interface of the G210M Nvidia should be enough for games.
The big headline is that the UL50Vf is the first notebook in the market to feature Nvidia Optimus ... Switchable latest graphics solutions from Nvidia. For the average consumer, all you need to know is that Optimus is the first switchable graphics solution that works the way it should switchable graphics. In short, do nothing. Optimus automatically detects when a piece of software needs to operate on the dedicated GPU and becomes a dedicated Nvidia graphics. When not running the software you need dedicated graphics the NVIDIA GPU and automatically shuts off the charts Integrated Intel do all the work.
In short, you get better performance when needed and improved battery life when you just surf the web or operation of Microsoft Office. Age switchable graphics solutions from NVIDIA and ATI are based on the manual switch: You have to reboot your laptop or you have to manually tell the notebook to switch between integrated graphics and dedicated graphics. As a result, most people with interchangeable graphics either leave their notebooks in IGP or GPU mode all the time and do not bother to change back and forth. Optimus is the first switchable graphics solution that does all the work for you so you do not have to think about it.
If you are a "user" and how to control when the system is using the graphics card you can click any application and tell the notebook manual for using the Intel IGP or GPU from Nvidia. There is a small delay of a second or two, when launching an application, while Optimus determines the correct graphics solution and either continues to use the Intel IGP or switch to Nvidia's GPU, but not observed by most users and can be corrected in an updated Nvidia driver.
