How to Compare GPS Units to Get the Best for you

To find out which of the many GPS systems is best for you, you need to compare GPS units in some logical way. This needs to first understand what is offered and how much it will cost. If you know your budget, you can reduce the selection a little. After that, it's just a matter of fine tuning what additional features you want.

For GPS units, I mean the type that they attach the windshield of your car, not the type to take trips with you. There are plenty of GPS systems out there and find the right seem confusing at first. In this article, I will mainly focus on systems built by Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan, as they are the largest manufacturers.

All GPS units track where calculate routes are and where you are going. Here is a list of what virtually all GPS devices that can already do. Think of this as standard equipment.

All GPS's

* Give voice directions.
* Has a touch screen.
* Having different views or representations of their maps.
* Includes a database of Points of Interest (POI).
* They come with maps of all 48 states.
* Automatically calculate the best route.

This is all great, but is that the additional or optional features that are the real kicker!

According to the amount to pay, you can get:

* Spoken street names, instead of normal voice instructions.
* Increased 4.3-inch screen – measured diagonally.
* Maps of Europe, Canada and Mexico.
* Incorporating Bluetooth.
* Tell you real time traffic and weather.
* Can be used as a digital photo viewer player audio books or MP3.
* Having a POI database much larger.

What we really need to do now is find out how much you're willing to pay, and then see the brands and models that fit your budget. Let me give some examples.

A basic GPS costs $ 200 or less. So that you can buy a very nice unit from Garmin, Tom Tom, or Magellan, you can do all the basic features mentioned above. There are three possible models Garmin nuvi 200, the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, or the Magellan Maestro 3100.

If you do not need Bluetooth for hands-free calls, or instructions actually say the name of the street (but I say "turn right" or something like that), then a base unit can easily be all you need to buy.

If you want all the bells and whistles, then you will have to pay more. The top of the line unit of Garmin makes the costs in the neighborhood of $ 900, but you can do anything by you, except tie your shoes. (They have a model coming out next year they can do that! Just kidding!)

GPS units are great and there are a lot other features that you get with these devices. What to do now is decide on your budget and get online and shop.
