Auto GPS or GPS?

GPS systems have become invaluable in recent years, helping people around the globe find their way through of cities, towns, fields, mountains, and by the middle of nowhere for years. GPS systems are used as handheld devices, can be found as a characteristic cell phones, and can be mounted on cars. These systems, known as global positioning systems, using satellite signals to define the places and destinations in the map database of these devices. Each satellite completes an orbit around the Earth every 12 hours, and carry an atomic clock transmitting a position signal and a time signal that is captured by the GPS receiver. This allows the unit to perform all kinds of calculations required to arrive at a fixed location, by usually accurate to about 50 feet.

There are two main types of GPS receivers for consumers, the type of hand and the type of cars. Although both types have the same purpose, are very different in many respects. First, the units of the handheld that many people use outdoors while hiking, biking, etc, are made to withstand the elements wind, rain, ice, humidity, etc. They are made of water resistant material or rubber to absorb shock if left fall. They are smaller than the GPS units from cars and should be easy to hold with one hand. Visual display units in handheld are smaller than units of vehicles, and a common theme for handheld devices is that they require substantial autonomy to operate.

Auto units GPS are generally larger than the handheld. They are also portable, but do not cooperate well when out for a walk. They are not waterproof or water resistant and larger screens that make them unique and heavy. The large screen also absorbs the battery life quickly, but fortunately almost all models can connect right into the cigarette lighter adapter. Many of them speak to the user, giving audio directions and the use of roads and road maps. The handheld units only come with base maps, if they come with a set of maps at all. Therefore, if you are trying to decide whether to get a handheld unit or an automatic GPS, weigh the pros and cons of each, as a final trial, to find out if you need instructions more often when you hike and bike or if you get lost during the more driving.

There are many companies that manufacture GPS systems for cars. Some of them are made by companies such as Garman, Jensen, and Magellan. Of the major brands of time at home with the kids, the less well known GPS manufacturers keep adding features and gadgets that make systems that consumers ooh aah and technology, even while driving.
